Composers Today

Encourages and stimulates teachers and students to write music and offers opportunities for evaluation, recognition and performance of original compositions. The program includes a non-competitive MTAC Evaluation, Branch Contest, State Contest, Branch Composers Festival Recital, State Convention Symposium Recitals and Winners' Recitals and a Young Composers Guild (YCG). Annual teacher and student workshops are also held. The following materials can be ordered from Central Office: The Composers Today Syllabus - A Guide to Teaching Composition, The Craft of Composition student workbooks (Preparation Level through Level 5), The Improvisation Syllabus and The Improvisation Games and Activities Book.

Composers’ Today Evaluations - Original compositions by either a teacher or a student are submitted by January 15 for evaluation. Each entrant receives a certificate as well as comments, suggestions and ratings by two evaluators. Pieces with a rating of 4 or 5 may be submitted by April 15 to the Composers Today State Symposium Chair for consideration for Convention Symposium Recitals.

Other Requirements: Composition manuscript must be done entirely by the composer, either by hand or computer.
Fee: varies according to length of composition, starting at $25.00

Summary: This is a recital to celebrate the original compositions written by students who have entered their pieces in C/T Evaluations, the Branch Contest, the MTAC State Contest or YCG.

Girls- Street length dress/skirt, or dressy slacks and dress shoes.

Composers’ Today State Composition Contest - A highly competitive contest for MTAC teachers and students throughout California. Original compositions are judged by two judges. All entrants receive written comments. The winners of the contest must perform the winning pieces at Convention in order to receive their cash prizes.
